I want more power for riding two up....what kit do you guys recommend.?? Does it have everything I need to upgrade to a 96ci. Im running true duals, PCIII and a heavy breather already.
How old is it?
If it's time for a rebuild, HD can bump it up to a 96" mill when they do the rest. Bonus is, you get a 1 year, 100,000 mi warranty, it's built to factory specs, and you get to keep the orig. VIN.
I'm thinking about doing this to my 1999 88". It'll run me about $3500.00 for the whole schebang. Might be a good time for a re-paint while I'm at it...
I would consider just going to 95". It's less than half the price, gives you a fresh top end and to be honest, I prefer the 95 to the 96.
While it's apart have the cam chain tensioners replaced and you should be good for quite a while.
The 96 is no better then the 88, the power difference between the two is not even noticable. They both have the same bore size meaning they both take the same sized piston. The only difference is the stroke and slightly different porting in the heads.
For a low cost upgrade that will kill the 96 and even walk a stock 103, Get the SE flat top "95" piston kit. Get the jugs bored to match the pistons. Go on Ebay and find some newer "96" heads. Go with a 30 thousands head gasket for the assembly. Find a cam setup of your choice. I am running andrews 26s in my bagger. Get it tuned and run it.
If you go gear drive with the cams then you don't have to worry about the cam chain tensioner upgrade.
I would not even waist the time or money getting a 88 converted or swapped for a 96.
Thanks for the feedback; for info my 06 SG has only 7,000 miles...I know the mileage is low and the bike is cool to cruise, but my wife has started a to ride with me and as her complaint is only the seat comfort; however i really noticed the lack of power in the foothills.
All I can tell you is my experience.
Pulled the heads and jugs. Sent them off to be worked (bored and flowed.)
Got rid of the tensioners & went gear drive. Installed Andrews 26's...it ain't the same machine!!!
A few other upgrades while I was in that deep. I turn my own wrenches, but it still ain't cheep.
Had an azzhat keep my bike for an entire month this past april... said he's tuning it. Dayum liar.
Gonna have a "reputable" tuner on it next month... outta be even better.
You gonna keep the bike? Don't expect any return from your investment.
