I cut the rods out, installed adjustables, and went with stock tensioners. I thought about gear drive or hydraulics, but decided on stock this time.

I wouldn't have even known about the 'problem' if it weren't for HD Forums.

THANKS!

Have a 2003 FXD and a 2004 FLTR. Did the cams with gear drive early on for both bikes.

The cams made a world of difference.

I was mainly wondering because I have a buddy with a 03 RK and hes got around 35k on it.

I have had the same concerns lately. I have an 04 Road King with 22K on it. So I will have to be making the decision on when to take care of this potential problem shortly.

Waited till I got 40,000 on mine. I had to replace the oil pump also. That shoe material is hard on surfaces. Junk idea in the first place. Nothing but gears for me.

Sure glad I went hydraulic and this worry is behind me.

I think just putting in the same POS tensioner again is a waste of time and money...do it right the first time and sleep easy

Your wisdom just saved you big $$$. I have kept an eye on mine. Replaced the inside one at 43,000 miles cause I cracked it while checking it. Rebuilt the motor at 51,000 miles due to a bad crank. The outside tensioner still looks brand new as well as the inside so I left them alone. Probably gonna check them soon just for peace of mind after the rebuild.
