I was mainly wondering because I have a buddy with a 03 RK and hes got around 35k on it.

I have had the same concerns lately. I have an 04 Road King with 22K on it. So I will have to be making the decision on when to take care of this potential problem shortly.
Waited till I got 40,000 on mine. I had to replace the oil pump also. That shoe material is hard on surfaces. Junk idea in the first place. Nothing but gears for me.
Your wisdom just saved you big $$$. I have kept an eye on mine. Replaced the inside one at 43,000 miles cause I cracked it while checking it. Rebuilt the motor at 51,000 miles due to a bad crank. The outside tensioner still looks brand new as well as the inside so I left them alone. Probably gonna check them soon just for peace of mind after the rebuild.
