when brand new and stock, the 09', 96" motor didnt have enough torque to get out of the hole. And then there were 5 more gears to pedal through. I am looking to rebuild my schwinn 6 speed back into a harley 4 speed.
Now that's just too darn funny!!! {& appropo}.
And although true,... my '05 Deluxe (but not 05') had SE intake & SE 2-1-2 Dualies. I had her for four and a half years before getting a 2010 Heritage. My only performance upgrades are a K & N filter and where I live now I buy only non-E, 93 octane (had to use E-10 in the Deluxe...say, why don't they sell that corn to Africa where it'll do some good?).
After a year on the 96 inch all I can say is that it kicks the bejesus outta my 88". Plus the Heritage is several pounds heavier than the Deluxe. The Deluxe did get a little better MPG. Who cares? My 96 takes off much crisper, rolls on harder and passes faster than the '05. Only my '03 1200 was quicker...but that's a different kettle of fish.
Just my experience...others may differ.
My experience does differ greatly.
My '05 88 is faster out of the hole and stays that way. I wish you lived a little closer so's I could show you how wrong your 'seat of the pants" impression is.
It's all in the gearing.
Horsepower wise I doubt if there is 5 hp difference.
LOL. The 88 winds up quicker then the 96 due to the difference in stroke. Stock for stock the 88 will beat a 96 light to light. Add the same goodies to both of them and the 88 will still beat the 96.
I think that the main difference comes down to who tuned them.

I guess it's all relative. Every Harley I've been on seems to get down the road just fine, but they were not fast. If speed is your goal get a GSXR1000 or similar bike. If you want to have a good time and enjoy the day, get a Harley.
Amen, your going to need more pistons if you want performance or spend a fortune making it so.....it's a cruiser remember!
I need to add this comment to this thread then I can continue on......It took a lot of mod'ing to my 98 DWG to give it '*****' and the RK right out of the crate needed nothing but a good twist of the throttle. If you have to make comparisons just keep your 88 guys, we know how attached you can get to em.
