Default Rear Brakes

I had a dealer install my new rear tire the other day, and the service writer mentioned that I'd need new rear brakes soon. He quoted a price under $100, so it must be pretty simple. Any special tools needed or advice?

Nope. Just a good set of 12-point closed-end wrenches or sockets. Pulling the caliper is tight with the wheel on, so if you have rims you don't want to scrape up, make sure you drape a towel or large shop rag between the rim and caliper as you work it out and reinstall it. You will need a clamp and a flat piece of metal or something to compress the caliper pistons back in, so that you can fit the caliper back over the rotor with the new pads. They do sell a special tool for this, but I have never used or needed it. Also, make darn sure the pads are correctly seated in both sides of the caliper after it is installed back over the rotor. Happy wrenching!

newer bikes may be different, but on my '02 you don't have to pull the calipers.
just need to remove 2 ea. brake pins & the pads will drop out.
makes pushing the pistons in a little more work, but can be done easy enough.
also makes cleaning the piston more difficult.

If I was having a dealer change my rear tire, I would pay them under $100 to do the brakes. But not real hard to do youself and save the labor cost.

I just had new lyndall's installed on the last tire change, My Indy charges $20 per set/axle when doing tires. I won't mess with it for that. plus they clean the pistons.

They did a better job for 1/ 2 the $ than my dealer did the 1st time they were changed out.
