Went this weekend with a group for a benefit ride that stopped at 4 different bars over the course of the ride. We left at 1 and got back a bit before 5, IIRC. From the time I left my house until I got home that evening I put 66 miles on the bike, with about 50-55 of which were from the ride. It took us nearly 4 hours to go 50 miles. We would ride 10 or so miles, and stop for half an hour or more, ride another 10 miles and stop for another half an hour. If I'm riding, I want to actually ride dammit!
So Sunday I got out and rode nearly all day.

I didn't read all of the repliesd yet, bout at first thought you may be talking about the charity ride i was on Saturday.
But.. I think you just picked the wrong ride. We started at 10:30 and finished about 5pm. We rode a total of 140 miles. At the first two stops just stayed long enough to go to have a beer and go to the bathroom. Second stop was the same. The third stop was a decent restuarant, so we ate an early dinner there. That delayed us quite a bit. Then at the 4th stop, repated stops one and two again, just long enough for one beer and a pee.
The weather was nice and the ride was great. The only problem was the large group on the first leg of the ride. we broke down into smaller groups after the first stop. I don't like big groups eiather. went on as 5 to 6 riders for the remainder.
We hit 3 benefits, a COC meeting, and a chili cookoff on Saturday. Only 220 miles on mine. Not great but good enough for a 10am to 8pm day. Know what you are attending before you commit. Key word is "benefit", they normally have an explicit purpose and are more social than asphalt.
Yesterday a simple breakfast run turned into 400+ miles. Next weekend is a charity run (diabetes) that I know will be more about food, fun and music than riding. Happy to do both.
Yeah, never really understood the allure of "bar hopping". Drinking and riding are a bad mix anyway.
Bar hoping does not and should not always imply that alcohol is being consumed. Bar/taverns are social places - they serve soda, water, and all sorts of various non-alcoholic beverages.

When you're making the decision to go along with a social group ride...make the decision if you'll want to hit a few bars. Those kind of rides can be fun..with the right people. They can be fun with strangers too..gives you time to sit 'n yack 'n get to know others.
If you want to just ride...ride...ride...you can usually tell ahead of time if the ride will be that way, or not. Depends on the people, depends on the purpose of the ride, who organized it, etc.
Both types can be fun, depends what I'm in the mood for.

Welcome to the pop culture BIKER world. Bunch of goons put on their costumes and putt, putt down the road to the next hang out. The majority of them will have fingerless gloves, loud pipes, and mildew rags; calling each other brother. Schmucks!
Those rides not my thing. I ride with my dad and a few of my cousins every chance we get. There is nothing more real than the bond you have with family.
