Ditto on the Fox Creek Great people and great stuff I had the misfortune of going down - compliments of a drunk driver a year ago and my jacket and chaps saved my butt ( both from Fox Creek ) Helmets are personal preference I wera a half most of the time but love my full face whenit's cold and/or raining
Put this in the for what's its worth column....Like you, I am just getting back into motorcycling after 10 yrs without a bike. I do not quite understand the fascination with leather! Sure it does look cool, and provides some protection against road rash. A few months ago I was looking for a riding jacket on Ebay and ran accross (what I consider anyways) to be a really nice and totally functional VOTO jacket. It is a knockoff of Joe Rocket. Totally waterproof, removable liner (Very Warm), all sorts of pockets, reflective areas, and velcro straps to make it fit nice and keed the wind out. But the best part I feel is Body Armor built into the elbows, shoulders, collar bone, and upper back. It even looks pretty cool, the grey and black goes with my Heritage's aniversary two tone paint! A "Lady Friend" that rides a V-Rod says I look like I belong on a BMW when I am wearing it, but I like it. (I almost bought a BMW instead of the Harley actually)
IMHO just about anything ya find with a HD label is generally good quality but WAY overpriced! They make enough money on new bikes, parts and service....they can keep the aparel! Get what ya like and feel comfortable with. (I did buy an overpriced HD Brain Bucket from the local dealer) Oh almost forgot...the VOTO Jacket cost me 100 bucks including shipping!
While I agree with what others have said about Fox Creek Leatherâs quality, I would add a word of caution. Be sure they have your size in stock unless you are willing to wait. I ordered a pair of chaps from them several months ago when I was told they had my size in stock. When they came in they were too short so I returned them the next day and was told that they would order my size from the factory which should take about a week for them to get. After about 6 weeks of being told ânext weekâ I was told they do not place custom orders this time of the year and were actually waiting for a shipment with my size. [:@] They did promptly refund my money when I cancelled my order.
Chaps can be a tricky fit. You can try one four sets (all the same size) from four manufacturers, and no two will fit the same. You want a snug-enough fit so as to retain warmth, but not tight enough to be noticable. Length is usually a non-issue (if you're short like me anyway, they simply trim with scissors). I always tell people who ask that they should always try them on over clothing that you would be riding in in winter; take their time sizing them up and checking for restricted movement; and if possible, have someone with you who knows how they *should* fit. Chaps are the one item I don't think I would ever mail order (Internet).
My current set actually has a small elastic "v" on each inside thigh. They fit over any combination of pants and thermals, and are not only comfortable but easy to get in and out of. I "expand" in the winter months.
I don't think you can go wrong with Harley riding gear. You can find it cheaper, and maybe as good, but I have never been disappointed with any wearing apparel from Harley ( jackets, gloves, boots, helmet, etc)
i bought a nice heavy, armored, lined leather jkt at a local dealer for about $250 a few years ago. not long after that, i found the same freakin jacket at a m/c show (vendor) for $150
its great quality, fitment and protection... so, if i were you- id check out a show/swap meet that has vendors.
if you dont mind spending the $, the FXRG jacket is really nice
FXRG is great, price is rediculas but it covers all the bases to include armor, rain, cold, kidney belt, removeable liner and on and on. I guess another plus was being able to go in the shop and try them on and get what fit for sure. As mentioned before, chaps are a bugger to fit right. The FXRG overpants are great as well with all the same features as the jacket and you can connect the pants and jacket for NY cold weather. Plus, i always get discount coupons from my dealer so that helped.
