Default Leather Purchase

Hi All-

Just bought a "brand new" 1999 heritage classic and I haven't riden since 1980. Lookng for a leather coat and found a "nice one" for $475 at the harley dealership. i went online and have been looking at the leatherup.com website and think I found a nice jacket for about $100. Includes zippered cuffs, pockets and a removable liner. Has anyone bought a jacket through leatherup.com? Any suggestions?

How about helmets? Are 1/2 heltmets preferred? What about cold weather (i live in the Buffalo NY region), any suggestions?

and last...How about chaps...why do you were them and when? any certain items that I should be lookink for?

Okay, one ore thing....boots. How high and what makes a good boot for riding

Thanks from the newbie!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome, you can get better leather than HD's for a lot less. I think leatherup has a good rep. Others will fill you in on some others.

Leatherup.com is a decent place to do business. You will not have any problems returning items that are too small or so.

Leather is worn for protection from the cold and road hazards such as flying gravel. It will also help you should you go down. As to wearing Chaps or not, it's just like your helmet question. Wear the level of protection that you feel comfortable with...

IMHO,Harley has very high quality leather and is worth the price. My chaps are not Harley (chaps are to keep your legs warm by the way) but I'm getting new Harley brand chaps soon.On the boot thing, just make sure you get oil resistant soles.

Try www.jafrum.com I have the leather overpants. Very heavy and very good quality. Their jackets look good and are priced very reasonably.

Jafrum also has a nice selection of boots, helmets, etc. I prefer tha 1/2 helmet. The little skull caps arent enough for me and the full face are too much. The 3/4 are, simply put, dorky. Good luck.

For leather - Fox Creek Leather, best you can get without going custom, IMO, and less $ than HD AND Made in the USA. Great folks.

Boots - I have had a pair of Cruiserworks boots for about a year. Now, I haven't tried every boot available, but all HD boots I have tried are big, heavy, uncomfortable to walk in clod hoppers. My Cruiserworks are the best MC boots I have ever worn, and 100% waterproof, have kevlar reinforced ankles, and a reinforced toe. They weigh about the same as a pair of Justin Ropers, and look like them too. And you can walk all day in complete comfort, rare in a motorcycle boot.

Helmets - I wear a 3/4 and like it, and I don't think it looks dorky. The DOT halves, excluding carbon fiber, look dorky as hell to me, like a mushroom head. If you plan to ride in cold weather, really cold, try a full face. Most important, be sure it FITS PROPERLY.

I'm with HDFAN on Fox Creek Leather and Cruiserworks. Have stuff from both and it's high quality stuff.

I have a HD 1/2 helmet I wear in warm weather and a Shoei X-11 I wear when it starts to get cold.

Leather up is good. They also carry nice chaps. It is Pakistan leather, but the price for the quality is about as good as it gets. I wear a 1/2 helmet in winter with zip in ear warmers and goggles. A scraf and tinsulate gloves. Congrat on the new bike. I sold my scoot in 1982 and began riding my new 06 glide this last spring. It took me a while to feel comfortable on the bike. I still prefer a good rain storm to freshly laid gravel. You'll find the old riding ability will come back quick and with the added sense of the years you have lived. Again good luck and miles of smiles.
