But you're from up north - best we can tell down here, it's a northern custom to always drive in the left lane while matching the speed of the slowest car in the right lane.

Was talking to a WI State Trooper, when I was a newbie. He told me to go WOT when passing a semi, and then slow downn after passing. Said LEO's understood. That's what I do, and that's what I'll tell any LEO that stops me. I'd rather have a ticket, than be dead anyway.

That's why I pass idiots bunched up on 2 lanes riding 1 car length behind each other, at 5 mph below speed limit. I pass WOT, get in my own bubble than slow down. If you ain't by me you can't hit me, slam your brakes on in front of me, stop, then put your directional on (DUH!), etc...

That exact thing happened to me and the wife just this summer. We were headed to Charlston on I-20 and approaching a truck. I could hear it thumping as we got closer. I rolled on the throttle and no sooner than we were about 3 to 4 feet past the trailer wheels...BOOM! Sounded like a shotgun. I looked in my mirror to see the gator flying and everyone behind me on their brakes hard. Even the truck. Dont know who got hit but that gator was airborn when it blew.

It's not ***** but definitely a lack of brains for someone to ride beside any vehicle. I hate it when I am in the right lane and some idiot tries to stay beside me. I either accelerate or more likely, slow down till they are gone. I realize that in bumper-to-bumper traffic that is not always possible. But here in south AL, not often a problem. I ride like I fly, head on a swivel, watching what is going on around, and avoid distracting activities.

Years ago I was in a cage passing a 18 wheeler and caught a Gator in windshield. It didn't break but it did scare the **** out of me!

I hate running up on dumbasses that wants to drive beside big trucks. Traffic stacks up and there is no safe place. I usually just start backing off from the problem if I can't pass. I am a firm believer in there is no safe zone around anything bigger than me.

I would hope commen sense would make everyone avoid riding next to a truck for muliple reasons.

Always get in front if you make a decision to pass...

I agree with Chunker- I hate having people around me. It's bad enough I have to watch out for potholes and junk in the road, but if I have oblivious people close enough to hurt me, then I'm screwing up. I don't mind zipping out ahead of folks. They usually don't even try to catch up once I'm far enough away. I have that debate from time to time, about whether I should slow down and let them all go by, or should I speed up and let one or two come up on me eventually. I'd rather get a ticket for zipping out ahead than constantly have jackas-ses swarming around me. And yeah, I don't play any games with big trucks. I get past them asap.

The MSF teaches you to NEVER follow or ride along side a truck! The correct procedure is to grab a handfull of throttle, pass as far left as appropriate (exceeding the speed limit at the time IS ACCEPTED PROCEDURE) and pass safely and return to appropriate speed. Riding along side isn't ballsy, it's just plain stupid! Even little crap falling out of an open pick-up is deadly at highway speeds!
