Default Ya Better "Step On It" & Get Past That Truck

I think I learned a lesson the easy way tonight. On I80, I just got past a truck when I heard a big bang & looked in the mirror & saw a gator slam into the car behind me. I was in my car, but I got thinking that could've left a mark had I been beside that truck on my bike. From now on I'm gettin' past those trucks as quick as I can. Don't hang out in the passing lane beside those things, if you can help it.

I once saw one go through a windshield of the car following too close. Not a good result for the driver.

One of the things the HOG out here teaches during Formation 101 is when passing an 18 wheeler, as you pass get around quickly using as much of the far left part of the passing lane as you can thereby minimizing your exposure to a blow out. Also keep your eyes out for smoke or the smell of burning rubber, both of those usually precede a blowout.

Stay Safe.

I hang back from trucks til I know I have a clear fast shot past them.

Approaching I look for anything that might fly out. Then watch all visible tires for problems as I get by them as quickly as possible.

Couple years ago had a guy killed in West Memphis when an entire wheel came off an 18 wheeler and hit him.

Us truckers throw tires on purpose at people who want to ride beside us for some reason or other. Had a small group of 3 bikes ride at least 5-7 miles beside me the other day and the sad part is no one was in front of them and I was going 62 in a 70 MPH zone. I guess some folk have more ***** then brains. I watch my tire pressure and would never run recaps. I would hate to see some one get hurt but please every one when you are going to go around a semi just get it done ASAP and be done with it.

I have seen a few tires go when behind a truck. Like someone above said there are always signs. You will see small pieces flying through the air, see smoke, smell burning rubber and I have seen a wobbling deflated tire.
