yet another winter storage oil question...

Question yet another winter storage oil question...

al right folks... this is aimed at all the mechanics on the forum here...

I've been changing my oil before I put her to bed for the winter, then when I pull her out in the spring, & then half way through the riding season, & I use a synth blend.

my question is this...

what would be the harm in using the cheaper dyno oil for the storage oil change? If it is just sitting there for 3 months not running & I change the oil back to the synth blend in the spring, the oil really won't break down... can you guys see any problem with this? (doing this will save me a few $$$... & with the holidays, every cent helps)

The above links talk about "mixing"...and they show that it is fine. You're not even really doing that...you're draining the old...leaving perhaps a cap ful remaining in there coating the surface..and then pouring in new. I've flip flopped my oil changes a lot...have done synthetic...and then an oil change or two later I've done dino oil...and then I've gone back to synthetic, etc.

The important thing here is, that you are changing the oil BEFORE winter storage...so that old acid-infused oil is not sitting still on precision surfaces over an extended period of time.

So let me get this straight. You change your oil before winter storage, and then change it again when taking it out of storage without even using the oil? Is this normal? I always thought change it before winter, and then ride it in the spring. Am I wrong about this?

You guys put waaaaaay too much thought into this. Change it every 5,000 miles. If you ride less than 5,000 miles a year, change it yearly. Leaving used oil in the engine for a couple of months over the winter isn't going to harm anything.

Change oil when putting/prepping bike for storage & no need to repeat in spring - just a wa$te of good oil. Follow mileage intervals during riding season...

Use the oil you normally run with for winter storage. Change as needed next riding season.

wow do you do the same for your lawn mower, change the oil every 3000 miles period, storage isen`t necc,, for winter you guys have to remember these are machines not friggin gold

I agree. I think that whole idea is overdone.
Since you're not going to ride it until spring why waste fresh oil. If you don't want to leave the old stuff in there just drain it all out and refill when you're ready to ride it. Leave a big note on the bike that it's empty in case you forget.
