I am moving to Schweifurt Germany in a few months. Looking for information and people to ride with when I get there later in 2012. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Im from Germany, so if you need any information, dont hesitate to ask.
Regarding questions about riding and Harley Davidson, I would also recommend the forum MotorTalk.
Make sure you have an updated license before you go. USAREUR will not accept licenses that have an expiration date even though the state says it does not expire until you get out. Also they are now checking the db level of pipes. So if the pipes are too loud your bike will fail inspection. There are some awesome roads to ride there. I would always head south to the alps.
It's been 9 years since I was stationed in Germany, so I really can't offer much advice. I just wanted to chime in and say enjoy yourself. Best 2 years of my life thus far were spent in Germany. Get out and travel, make the most of your time there. It's likely a once in a lifetime chance to be so close to so many amazing historical sights and beautiful places.
I want to thank all of you for your help. I have a few follow-up questions. What is the definition of too loud? I have Rush two inch baffles. They are only loud when I really crack them. Airborne 3505, thanks for the license information. If I understand correctly, I should come over with a new state side license with the motorcycle endorsement that carries me through the whole time I am in Germany. So now, I need to get new one. Wideglidebob, I have several aftermarket parts on my Softail Night Train. I have a side mount license holder and some of the smoke out light on the front and back turn signals. HD100, Airborne350G, and Wideglidebob if you want to hit me up on pm so we can talk off line that would be great. I will also will be looking to ride with someone who knows the area. Thanks to all, Bryan
I have lived in Schweinfurt since 91. Here's a few answers for you. You will also need a MSF course. You will have to take a motorcycle test (book). As far as exhaust goes, too loud is 95 dB but is not strictly enforced. Go to Illesheim(45-55 min. south) for inspection. They don't sound test. side plate and lights (yours) no problem. I was running blinkers only on handlebar ends and passed every time. Stay away from Bunny's Cylcles, they tried to steal abike from a buddy that had passed away. Closest Dealer is Bertl's in Bamberg. (1 hr east) The BEST Indy in Germany is Peter Schaedel in Randersacker (Wurzburg) you can bring your own parts, oil, whatever and use a tax form (-19% off the top). [www.peter-scaedel.de]. There are some great day rides out of Schweinfurt and all roads are extremely smooth. Several cool meets in the area. Google "bike and music weekend" in geiselwind always 1st wkend in August. Anything else you can think of let me know. I'll give you email and contact info via PM if you'd like. Currently in Kuwait till 1 APR but always up for a ride.
