I have the large black one from sears, it is OK. I also have the large stainless one from Costco, it is a better tool box (and looks cool too). There is just something about stainless steel....

Think Costco was selling a box like their big 72" 15 drwer last summer for around $600 , may have been the same box . Shipping would double the price on thing I would think , don't why but all the good priced tools and machine tool all come from back east CA. has restrictions on them for reason . We,re closer to China but have no suppliers , man I'm smelling big pay off political game playing .

I went and got the HF box. My buddy Mike knows the manager and hooked up a killer deal. It was on sale for $359 but eh knocked it down to $279 as he is a member of the inside track and always works deals with him. This is a really nice box. No dents, no problems, it looks great. For under $300 with tax you can't beat it. And no black Friday hassles at 4am.
It really adds to the living room decoration. The wife loves it.

For a starter you can't go wrong man really and it beats the hell out of a bunch of tote boxes in the closet .

Funny, after reading this thread last week, I went with the Craftsman. Yep, got up in the morning and went to Sears. They didn't have one in stock, but let me order one for the same $299 price. I already have a similar Craftsman box, I'll put this one next to it. I have a bunch of Craftsman stuff, mostly everything, actually. Good enough for a backyard mechanic like myself. Not total junk, but a little better than most, I think. Even if they've went downhill over the years (of which I agree).

That HF box looks good too. I'm not opposed to it at all, I just decided to go with Craftsman to match all my other stuff.

Update:

I too was contemplating which box to get, the HF or the Craftsman. I decided to go with Craftsman simply because that's what all my other **** is. I was/am not opposed to the HF box.

But after putting it together, I can tell you gentlemen that Craftsman quality has gone way down hill. At least with their tool boxes. I have smaller, non-ball bearing model I got years ago, that's heftier than this thing. I'm glad I got this one on sale at $299 or I'd be pretty pissed. Still am to a point, because it will still meet my backyard mechanic needs all day long, but still.

This HF rocks. Bigger than the Craftsmen, more drawers and very sturdy. My buddy talked to the manager and got me an even better deal. My living room has never looked better.

I was actually impressed with the HF's quality. Not anywhere near that of my Matco or Snap-On boxes, but really nice for the money. The Craftsman is good as well, and I do prefer the finish of the Craftsman... easier to clean. Also like the latching system of the drawers on the Craftsman.
You also might want to check out Kobalt. Their boxes are comparable.
