I was on my way to go to lunch with wife and while riding down a somewhat winding, hilly road a big *** brown leaf made it around the Road Kings windshield and up under the face shield of my 3/4 helmet. This effectively blocked out my vision. I wore the 3/4 to help keep my ears warm and I don't like full face mask helmets.
I was able to flip the shield up and not loose control of the bike, remember after almost 20 years of not riding I am still getting used to riding. When I got to my wifes work I took off the helmet and removed the face shield. Now then, in which saddle bag did I put my clean boxers?? Scared the hell out of me! [sm=insomnia.gif]
That would have scared the hell out of me too.Glad to hear it was nothing worse than dirty drawers
Yeah, and I imagine you have a heck of a lot more riding experience than I do to. Right now there are certain things I won't do until my comfort and ability level rises. 1. No interstate riding yet. 2. No passengers and 3. No riding BLIND FOLDED.
If something odd or stupid is going to happen it will happen to me I tellya what. Good thing I have a tremendous sense of humor, it is funny now an hour ago, not so funny.
Face shields on 3/4 helmet create a kinda negative pressure area on the inside of the shield, things tend to go there when they get close.
I had a large dragonfly hit my knee once at 75MPH, most of the back half went straight up and stuck to inside of my 3/4 helmet shield.
Not a vision problem really, but very distracting.
Your situation is rare and should not keep you from using the face shield, it is much warmer on those cold days.
Thats the only thing I hate about riding in the Fall and early Winter. The leaves suck when they hit the face or get caught under a shield. Good thing you didn't loose control of the bike though, that would have been real upseting.
Hey, at least you're ok. Seems like you learned something from it.. and the best way- you didn't get hurt. Maybe it's "someone" telling you to take it easy and get a little more solo time in.
Well, after you've been riding for a long while you'll get where you can ride blind, drunk, asleep, talking on cell phone, slapping the kids on the pillion... After all, the soccer moms around here do it all the time....
