In a recent issue of Bagger magizine I read an artical about how making changes to your motorcycle can have unexpect after affects. Over the years I've tinkered with my Bike to make it look, ride and fit the way I like, I've noticed how many improvements do have a down side.
Examples are:
Tall boy seat resulted in less room for my passenger.
Adding passing lights to my Streetglide resulted a lot more work to remove the front fairing cover.
Adding chrome accents to the dash resulted in not being able to see some of the indicator lights as well as before.
Has anyone else made a change and learned about the down side after the change was made?
The biggest downside not knowing when to stop! ...... i have spent ten's and ten's of thousand's of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on Chrome and what was current at the time to add .... not complaining it's done but if half way through i saw a shrink he could have talked me out of spending the rest?
I put on a reach seat but it made the windscreen to tall. Replaced windscreen, but wife said her portion of the seat was to hard and it reduced her leg room too much. Bought a seat pad for her, but then she was taller than I was and did not like the wind turbulence............ And so it goes.
Nothin' on my Harleys, but back in the day I had a Z1 with a 4-into-1 header, and the entire exhaust had to be removed to change the oil filter--big PITA--so I wound up not changing the oil filter very often.
I bought a Yamaha Road Star for $10,000 and ended up having over $17,000 invested and the darn thing still wasn't a Harley. I got smart, sold it and bought a Heritage Softail and never looked back. Sure wish I had all that chrome Yamaha money back, the Harley would be paid for!
Worse cases I've seen are add on winshields and wings that cause too much buffeting and made a couple bikes unridable over 70mph or changed the air flow to where the rider was was getting hit harder than without one . Seen lots of gadets and add on's that looked cool but blocked something else or made the rider / passenger uncomfortable , lots of seats and floorboards & footpegs fall into this one . Most any Kuryakin bling is useless or takes more work & change than it's worth like their big *** air cleaners .
