Went down many times in the dirt, mostly expected it. My first street sweep was on an old Suzuki 250, into a corner too fast, hit some dirt and low sided it into the ditch. Lesson learned.

I have an 04 Heritage and love the feel, however I ride a lot differently now than I did back then.

I'm sure glad I've got more than 100 posts.
Excellent point!

Ditto on that. Turned off the highway onto a county blacktop and didn't see the sand that had accumulated there. It hurt my pride a lot more than it did my 750 Shadow...

I rode old POS's for 12-15 years before i bought my first new bike and it was a XL883C....I'm a big guy 6'1" 240lbs at the time....put 20000 miles on it in 2 years then bought my 07 FLHTC... 68000 miles on it and i dropped it in the garage the other day.....**** happens...this is probably the 4th time dropped...no biggie....I will need a lighter big eventually because of my knees...Rheumatoid Arthritis (SEVERE)....I am getting all of the riding and fun stuff i can out of life while i am still relativately young at 47....Thinking maybe a Heritage for the wife and a Road King for me or a Older Dyna Wide Glide...one of the pretty ones..LOL.

5400 freaking posts and i am still not immune.....

Your first bike should not be perfect, any more than your first car was. You did not learn to drive in a new Lincoln or a Corvette, it was in an old car that if it got bumped and scraped that would OK. Bikes should be the same way.

I think it also has to do with 2 wheel experience overall. Dirtbikes and bicycles included. I ride dirt since I was little. Always had friends with mini bikes. We all rode bmx. When I got around 11 I started with a Yamaha MX 100. The first street bike I rode was a FZR600 and I laid it down. That was back in '90. I quickly learned the differences between street and dirt. I never owned a street until my Harley, but rode a few others throughout the 90's. I don't think it has to do with the size of the big twins as much as that feel for two wheels. Compared to a CB 750, a Yamaha Maxim, a Ducati 916 SPS and that first FZR 600, the Dyna was and is the most comfortable and easy to ride. I sat on a bunch of other cruiser styles including the Sportster and non Harleys, but non felt as balanced or as comfortable as the Dyna. The Sportster seemed top heavy.
