Milwaukee engineer boots zip up the back. Very soft soles and minimal break in. Not sure how they last.

I have a pair and they have lasted for several years of riding without issue.

I still have a barely worn pair of size 8-1/2 Bates all-leather rear-zip boots which no longer fit. Now have TCX side-zips which are even more comfortable and easier to get on and off. There is no disadvantage to the (in)side zipper. It is fully covered and can't scratch anything. Mine have been superseded but look like these:
