Chuck there's a pretty extensive thread somewhere around here about boots. You might try and do a search to find it. There's some alternatives that might be cheaper than the HD boots.
To summarize what I remember from the original thread, people wore anything from HD boots to Doc Martins to Red Wing and most were at least over the ankle. You can't really go wrong with any of them, it depends on your preference in style and your price range.
I've found you can get the HD branded boots, not only off the internet but at cowboy boot places, Academy Sports and other shoe stores. I don't know that any of them are any cooler than others unless you get a mesh upper.
My favorite boots at the moment are a pair of Oxtar Gore-Tex. They were on sale at New Enough. They still have a few pair left in their closeout section. Not real "cool" necessarily, and not "Harley'ish, but I find them very comfortable and more importantly, would ride anywhere in them and expect them to last for years.
Forgot to mention, I asked my local dealer about boots and they said they couldn't compete with Farm and Fleet (the place where George Strait buys his shirts, if you've seen that commercial). I don't know if they have a web site or not, but we have a store here and I went over there and they had quite a selection of Harley clothes. I bought a pair of Harley boots there for $60. You might check them for a web site.
Dunno if this store is everywhere but malls here near Atlanta have a store called The Shoe Dept. They have some HD boot styles half price. I bought a pair, Dipstick boots, Yeah yeah I know horrible name! I got them for 50$ though. So far they are wearing great, fairly comfy, durable, and the break in wasnt too bad either. That store had 3 diferent styles sorry I dont recall what the other two were.
