I usually run Amsoil synthetic 20-50. I know it's great to use during cold winter months. But the mechanic at the shop I go to says during the hotter months to run straight 50. Makes the bike run cooler. Seeing how my bike get quite hot (a lot of traffic here in NY) this sounds great.
Amsoil has straight 60, not 50. They say use of their 60 weight is replacement for regular 50 weight oil.
So, what are the opinions of everyone here?
*Running straight oil cool the engine a little more?
*If yes, 60w okay to use? I trust Amsoil, but prefer to follow the numbers Harley says to use which is 50w.
*Stick to 20-50 synth and quit crying about oil?
K. I thought about this same thing, running straight weight,so I posed the question to twizted, who's knowledge about Harleys is absolutely amazing. I take his advice on Harleys as gospel.
Now he said running straight weight may cause gasket issues on a twin cam. If you are concerned about engine temps that much I suggest running a 10w-60.
A 10w-60 will be a bit thinner at start up in cooler weather(good) and a bit thicker when the bike is up to temp.
But honestly just keep using what you are using. We get serious cold here in Saskatchewan and I wanted to see how well amsoil v-twin poured in -40. Well it still ran ok,not complete jello. So in any temp above 0c I wouldn't be concerned at all.
And the summer heat,if it bothers you,try an oil cooler. And keep using the same oil.
As already mentioned if cost concerns you mobil 1 15w-50 is a bit cheaper, and on paper very similar to mobil 1s v-twin oil.
But I am going to defer to twizted bikers advice on the straight weight oil and suggest no in a twin cam.

Thanks all. That's what I was afraid of (gaskets). I've always been a fan of Amsoil synth, so I'll go by the old adage that don't screw with something that works.
