Are you SURE about that 3.5 thing? The reason I ask.... is because when I removed the rear seat and saddlebags to condition them.... I had to swap out the rear docking kit to install the rear rack. Particularly on the rider's left side of the bike, I had a HELL of a time just getting a wrench on the back side of the docking kit. The clearance was really tight.

If the OEM is 3.5... then I'll just buy a 3.5 wheel. If it is a 3" wheel... I'd like to stick with oem size though, as an upgrade may likely rub the fender. I would like to go up to an 80-spoke wheel though.... I just need to make sure I get the right size..... which I cannot seem to get a definitive answer on.
The rim is a 3" rim. Most companies offer rims in that size, if you're stuck on that size.

I know you think it's a tight fit, I've been there with that. It was tight for me as well when I re-installed my rear fender after having it repainted.

Something to think about:
At 3.5" it's only 1/4" wider at the lip on the rim. You'll still be running the same width tire on there, the MU85B16. So it won't be any more wider next to the fender, only where the bead of the tire is.

I know you're concerned, but so many here have gone to a 16x3.5", without issue.

Edit:
The part number for the rear wheel is: 43085-97

Here's a little confirmation that it is indeed a 16x3" rim.

Thanks!!!! I think if I were just going to buy the same rim.... I would just have mine re-spoked. The rims themselves are mint.... the spokes however, definitely show their age. I'd like to upgrade to a new rim... same size and style as the oem.... but in an 80 spoke version.

In the meantime..... I bought a few things to attempt to polish them up a bit.... not sure if it will work, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Thank you though.... now I know what to look for.

EDIT: Hey.... that rim you posted a link for came off a sportster...???????

the reason the spokes show their age is because hd uses zinc coated spokes. they'll look good for the first season, then after that, forget it.
