I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death but I thought I might add a short story. I live in central Texas and have always wanted to ride my bike in Mexico. I went to Del Rio for a friends wedding last week and thought about dipping into Ciudad Acuna. This is after being warned by people (who had never been there) and ignoring the State Department's warning. I didn't care. I was going the next day after the wedding and no one was going to stop me! The night of the wedding I met some super nice locals and asked them when was the last time they had gone and where I should go.
They said "No problem. We went today to get tacos at Tappatia #2. But some teenager walked in with an AK-47 and started walking around like he was looking for someone. We decided to get our tacos to go." Well.......after that story I didn't go.
Once again, avoid the border. Cross first thing in the morning and get several hours in.
Then have a fantastic ride that will be one of the most memorable journeys of your life.
Get the opinions of folks who have done it and you will find that the fear is very much overplayed.
This country (USA) thrives on instilling fear in its citizens. The federal government instills fear that the rest of the world is an evil place. The media instills that same fear. We are a country that the majority lives in fear everyday for no reason whatsoever.
I don't travel to ANY foreign country that I don't want to support with my dollars. That simple. I'm a scuba diver, and have dove a lot of the Caribbean islands, but won't do Cozumel or Cancun. They are "safer" than most of the rest of Mexico, but I don't want to support that country with my dollars. Eff them, the gov't. there does everything they can to screw the US. There are plenty of other "friendly" countries I can spend my money on.

Reason: Punctuation
I read that he was glad he didn't rent a big bike down there after all. It would be super cool to ride down to Cabo but it's also pretty cool not to be dismembered and hung upside down from an overpass.
They only do that to their competition. Not tourist or those who support them. Most of our drug lords are more cat like in this country, they cover up their mess with a few feet of dirt (cement) ..why you never hear about it.
