On one of the days we looked at renting a Harley to go down the coast but we would've had to go to Cancun to get it. We were about 30 mins from there. It was too much anyway...around $175 per day I think.

Instead the 2 of us rented a cab, driver and all for the day. 8-5 pm. Total price $160.00 USD. He didnt speak much english and we didnt speak any Spanish but it still worked. AC was nice too. He was a pretty good guide.

We didnt want to go inland too far because of many of the reasons mentioned here. I think if you stay on the coast between Cancun and Tulum you'll be okay as it is mostly resorts dotted along the coastline and likely safer with many tourists.

We did Cancun, Playa de Carmen, the ruins at Tulum and some really cool cave exploration as well. This took the whole day.

If you choose to go the cab route, you should approach one of the cabs associated with a resort. They park outside of the resort gates until they're called. You can hire then directly and you can probably find one at any of the resorts. You will make their day if you hire them for the day day.

Good luck and have fun. Its a beautiful place.

that would be the way to do it

Like many others have said.... We vacation there often, and will be there again in a few weeks, but I'll NEVER rent/ride 2 wheels there. As cool as it would be, it's cooler to make it home alive...

Take the ferry to Cozumel, frankly,I'd rather stay in Cozumel than the Yucatan,or Isla Mujera. But you can get a taxi and go around the island for about 50 bucks all day. You'll soon figure out that, with the crappy roads and drunken idiots driving on them, riding a motor might not be a good thing.Great snorkeling, you can get on a big cat and float 3 miles of the Palancar reef for peanuts,.

You'll probably be fine, the violence is typically between the drug cartels, there is always a risk of being robbed by a poor Mexican, but the odds in the USA of being robbed by a poor Mexican are pretty good too.

My wife just sold a horse and the couple that bought him just got back from Cozumel. Talking with the husband he said they were board one day so they rented a Harley and road around the island. He said it was a blast and would do it again. Myself, I have no intentions of going back to Mexico, just not for me. As a side note, why is it most of the beautiful tropical areas and resorts are in third world countries?

Enjoy your vacation with the wife and relax. It would be an adventure but why take such a risk with such well known hazards....I guess my age is showing.

Yeah, it's not like "poor" mexicans ****** Americans for ransom.

It's not even like they'll cross into the US and pull 'em back into Mexico for ransom.

Wear your best clothes and jewels and strut like your **** doesn't stink, and be sure to speak with your best American accent. That way they'll be sure to leave you alone.
