I was talking to a friend who is a LEO here about this the other day. He pointed out that a lot of traffic laws (speed limits, texting and driving, etc..) actually have an exemption for law enforcement. So in his words, "legally they're not doing anything wrong, but morally, they suck". I figure those are the most appropriate words for that.
So basically what it amounts to is that they are above the law & traffic laws don't apply to them...literally.
I about got hit on my scoot by a local cop just this week who was speeding & talking on his cell phone & not paying attention....luckily I was.
I did however refrain from flying the bird at him, but man it was hard not to.
I don't give a F$@k if they are responding to an emergency or just patrolling, they should take the public's safety in mind first and not create unsafe conditions themselves.
Responding to the OP's story, they were wrong & should have gotten over...period. Doesn't matter if they were responding to an emergency or not & if they weren't, they should have stopped to help the motorist.
OP, I am with you. I have a lot of friends that are LEO's and I am very supportive of them. But here in the Midwest, I also expect a high level of courtesy and professionalism, from them. Especially State Patrol.
When I was in Florida the most extreme dangerous drivers speeding recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic and almost forcing surprised Minivan Moms off the road was the FHP. I was shocked the risks they went to, to catch some tourist going 3mph over the traffic flow. If I was a Florida resident I would have complained about some of those cowboys.
I wouldn't expect them to call you, but hopefully their supervisor gave em what for.
I know better than to think I will ever get a call and I also know an anonymous call will be just that. I was hoping that by my tone an leaving my name that at least the commander what tell them next time move over dumb a$$. As for being scared they will start laying for me, For me not a concern.
I don't care what anyone says. They were to lazy to move over a lane. Happens all the time not just cops but all drivers that lack courtesy. Very lazy and selfish if you ask me. Cops should know better. JMO.
