Congratulations on passing the riding course Ryan. Now, get out there and ride, ride, ride. Each that you do it will bcome more and more of natural feeling thing that you do. Your body will become more connected to your bike and you will actually, believe it or not, begin to communicate with each other. Take it easy at first and you'll do just fine. You're going to love the new skill sets that you acquire in the process, not to mention how deep your passion for riding will grow as you do.

Ryan,
Your sportster is very very quick. Least little bit of throttle and the bike will get with it.
Find a high school parking lot when the cars are gone and practice the stop and starts over and over. These can be life saving moves. I my opinion you need those first. When you are confidant starting and stopping. Try some controlled panic stops. Slower speeds then a little faster until your controlled panic stops are good. Remember just about the time you think you know what your doing the bike will get you.
Congrats on passing and take it easy until a year or two down the road. You will do fine.

don't sweat things - no one came out of their momma riding no matter how bad a they seem

don't push yourself too hard - take your time - and recommend walking around parking lots with your butt on the seat, just like you did in the rider's safety course (just slowly letting out the clutch and pulling it back in - touching the throttle as little as possible) As you feel more comfortable, pick up your feet a little but stay in 1st and 2nd gear... you'll get it!

Congratulations on passing.
There is lots of good advice here already.
Get out and practice and ride.
Keep your eyes open and watch out for the other guys.
Learn the friction zone.
Don't over-do.
Consider taking the advanced class.
Ride Safe, Have Fun, Wash Hands Often.

"so overwhelmed by learning to ride"

lol... the wise ones, yes Ryan. Take it slow, don't push yourself. Sometimes we want something so bad, we run right past and miss out completely.

Rode alone and learned alone. Took me a year to "feel" the bike. As Black Bart says, you will become connected to your bike. Just remember you are the one in control, that's why you took the course, to learn how.

cheers! and welcome to our world
