I really need some help! I have a brand new 2012 Switchback that I washed and now all my covers are tarnished looking!!! It only happened on the covers, the pipes and other chrome parts are just fine! I thought the covers were also made out of chrome, but maybe not?
Can someone please help me with suggestions other than buying all new covers. I'm so upset that my new bike looks like crap!!
Thank you so much for anyone's input!! I'll include a pic!
Did you use a harsh solvent on the engine area? I'm assuming those spots/runs won't rub out with some elbow grease...Also, that area in your photo is on the cam side, does your primary cover look like that as well?
Yes all the covers look like that. I used a diluted "Awesome" cleaner. It says on the bottle that it is safe for chrome and it was diluted. But I guess it is not. I have used that to clean past bikes and it did just fine.
strip off the factory coating and polish it. the cam cover can be taken off because there is nothing behind it. the primary cover should be polished on the bike. it will look really good after that. then use wax to keep them shiny between polishing. i use bike bright or s100 to clean mine. a cheap alternative is dish soap or car wash. i have found that semi-chrome works very well to polish bare aluminum.
