I have a 45mm Mikuni on my Road King that has a 103 in it and it runs great. When you get on them the make a Chattering noise for lack of a better word but the response is almost as good a Fuel Injection. That being said, on a stock bike, it is hard to beat a CV carb. They are great carbs as well. Carbs Rule!
Just put one on my 04 RK along with alot of engine work. Awsome throttle response, Only down side is some slide rattle, not that big of a deal. I called mikuni, A guy by the name of Steve gave me some starting point tips for jetting with my build.
I have the Mikuni HSR42 on my mosty stock Evo engine. I've messed with almost every carburetor the MoCo used including the Zeniths and the "Micky Rooney" (as I've always called them) are the best!
I always use CV's; a 44 on my 100hp Sporty, a 51 on my current 111hp 103, a 51 with cruise control on my buddies 124 (the 48 Mik was sluggish) - I like the driveability; I think most "independants" dis the CV's simply 'cause they're only available from HD. Mik's are great carbs; better than the S&S (described by one grey-hair I know as "1 step up from a gas soaked rag") Also with a CV you can safely overcarb the engine and still get good response. Having said all that, I've seen a lot of good running bikes with Mikuni's...but fastest, incredible and awsome are a bit of a stretch in my experience
I was recently in the market for a new carb. I researched every option. S&S, Mikuni, Screamin Eagle CV, ect.... After looking at all the options I choose a Dales Killer Carb. He's a guy who builds custom CV carbs based off the stock unit that comes from the factory. I posted a long thread about it in the Evo section. For the money it was the best option for me even though I had never heard of him or used him in the past. Quite a few people on this board have used Dales Killer Carbs and there wasn't a negative review anywhere to be found. He can customize your unit or sell you a new one. My results have been beyond all my expectations. Cold start and cold idle are better than any Harley I have ever owned, throttle response is perfect and instantaneous, power is greatly improved, I have yet to have even a single carb fart, and fuel mileage actually improved. The work to install it is almost non existent because its a 100% direct replacement. Dale does all the jetting calls based on your existing setup, and the carb arrives at your house 100% ready to bolt on. Adjusting the idle "may" be the one single adjustment you need to make. So that being said, yeah, the Mikuni is probably a good carb, but for ease of install and tuning, I would at least look at a Dales Killer Carbs.

He does good stuff , you got a CV done right without all the quirks the aftermarket carbs have and yes they all have something to deal with however minor it is . They are carbs comes the territory .
