So I've been having some lower back problems, it's a fact that I have four compressed discs... but they have not bothered me in over a dozen years. I'm racking up the years.. pushing 67, and I guess the old bones are just getting weary.
My Question... I s anyone using a Kidney Belt for lower back support? It was suggested to me a couple of times this week, but by non riders. I was told the Mongol Horsemen (not the Bikers) wore a tightly wrapped sash that enabled them to ride long distances without back strain.
I've got two crushed/herniated disks in my lower back that have been giving me trouble since originally injured at work 18 years ago...I'll be 40 in June. Back pain is a terrible problem for me too. I can't imagine how bad it will be when I get to your age, if I make it there. I just hope I'm still mobile and functional.
I've tried the lower back support braces that many construction/warehouse (and the like) workers use, with mild success. In my experience, exercise and not over straining the back has been the best. I did end up with debilitating pain again last week. Through my experience, the medical professionals I've dealt with haven't suffered the same problem(s), so they have no idea how bad the pain really is.
I realize this really doesn't help answer your question, just another individual that understands and deals with the same issue you have. Good luck.
I picked up a weight lifters belt at walmart that is air adjustable... add or deflate according to my needs.. it does help but I do find myself taking breaks more often than I have had to in the past. I'd rather enjoy my rides... taking my time to get there than hurry and roll around in pain at journeys end.
I did what hd jim did. I bought a black weightlifters belt at Dicks Sporting goods. Made a huge difference on the long hauls. It was like a "must have" part for when I had my Shovel. Not much money and very thick leather.
I used to wear one all the time when I was riding dirt bikes. For your situation I would highly recommend it. Go to the local dirt bike shop and snag one.
My GF has lower back problems (which was one of the reasons we ended up buying a Road King). A Lumbar Support Belt helped enormously (pre-Road King).
They aren't quite the same as a Weightlifter's belt although the theory is the same. A properly adjusted Lumbar Support will hide under your clothing and be relatively inconspicuous. I suspect they're probably a bit cheaper too.
Any decent pharmacy should carry them, or you can pick them up online.
It works great for me. I had severe sciatica pain in my leg on a trip to Alaska. I bought this belt after that trip and have not had any more pain on several long trips after that.

Thanks for all of your input guys... Gonna look into that this afternoon... but here's an update.... after not riding for three weeks I took the Bike out twice, no issues at all.. Then, yesterday after posting this query, I went out to the shooting ranged (caged it)... shot Benchrest for an hour, took a break then went over to the Pistol Range.... after standing for about 15 minutes and 40 rounds.... my lower Back was talking to me.... seems standing is the aggravating factor, but I'm gonna try that belt in that situation too.
Too bad they don't make a belt with heat.....then again a wife or girlfriend with her legs wrapped around your mid-section might help!!! Instant heat and support!! Seriously though, good luck.....I haven't found anything that works for long rides or cold days. Pain pills and heating pads after the ride is my regimen!!! lol
