Default Helmet questions

Posted this in the wrong forum, so reposting it here.

I'm in the market for a helmet, but can't seem to find one I like in the local area and I'm contemplating ordering one online.

First question, are sizes fairly standard between manufacturers? In other words, if I find the right size in a local shop, can I then just order that size online and have a good degree of confidence that it'll fit the same?

Second question, are there any manufacturers I should stay away from?

I'm looking for a half, with visor and face shield.

Thoughts? And thanks for your replies.

I know that one of my half helmets is a Large and the other is a Medium. They both fit the same. I am kind of in the mindset of personally trying on helmets, gloves and boots or you may not be happy with the fit. Especially with a helmet - you really don't want one that doesn't fit right.

A helmet is something you just have to try on. Forget the internet.

They all differ.

Every helmet manufacturer has to make their helmets to a certain standard - I don't know what the American one would be, but in Europe they have to have certification stickers on them to be sold legally. Therefore, no one's helmet is safer than another (although they do vary according to the design and the circumstances under which you... need it).

Most helmet manufacturers have sizing charts on the web. One company's Large, may be another company's XL. The problem is not really a size thing, as much as it's a shape thing. Some helmets are more round or more oval than others, so you really ought to try them on, for proper fit. I had a XL Joe Rocket that fit pretty good, but it put pressure on my forehead, so it was too round for my head. Now, I have a L Shoei, that I tried on. It's a perfect fit and is comforable all day.

Look in phone book, or GPS some motorcycle shops...I'm sure there are some fairly close to you in FL. Go look/try on/price & then order online. I've done this w/every helmet the past 10-yrs & it's the best way to get fit correct...otherwise you can exchange, but there are fees/return shipping.

try www.compacc.com. As other have mentioned here; trying on a helmet is important. Some fit great others are a no way situation. I have found however that if I can wear one from a company I can usually wear others from the same co. For example I wanted an HJC FS-3 but couldnt find one in town. I tried on a couple other HJC's and they fit so I ordered on from the company above and I love it.

I just ordered a half helmet from leatherup.com they had a sizing chart and the helmet fit me perfect...
