Yeah, chain doesn't roll over a roller--it would rattle like hell as each link came into contact. A larger sprocket would be required to make a smooth job of it. The plastic shoe offers a large surface over which several links are in contact, and is shaped such that each approaching link does not abruptly change direction, as it necessarily would w/ a roller.

No need to complicate this.

later on could they? If the tensioners never failed then the dealerships could not make a dime tearing into a bike and replacing worn out shoes. Also while your bike is in there shop they have a chance to go over your bike with a fine tooth comb to drum up some more buisness for thereselves. I always thought Screamin Eagle should do gear to gear cams but thear not

Oh and I bet if you posted in the engine forum you might get the gearheads. General chat is just that...
Ok, it is constructed with a shaft w/a groove on the end instead of the piece that holds the plastic shoe. The roller sprocket has a bearing, perhaps ball bearing, a bronze bearing at the least, that is kept lubricated since the entire chain and all run in oil. The roller sprocket slides onto the shaft and is maintained in place by a clip.

You might be right about the last part, but folks don't understand that they might get better answer to their tuning questions if they asked in that forum either.

I don't know if there are more threads on cam tensioners here or over in the Ford Explorer forums with the 4.0 V6. Same system, same failure rate.

I can't believe someone hasn't said this yet with that other thread going on. Get a shop manual!

Yeah it seems like gear drive on the cams, eliminate the rear tensioner, and the roller/Hyd, or the silent chain tensioner on the outer drive, since it is relatively easy to service would be a good solution. Based on purchase options at Andrews it looks like a kit like that could be pieced together.

I thought the roller chains WERE part of the hydraulic upgrade!

The screaming eagle kit is roller in front and silent chain in the back for the 02-06 engines.
