The reason would be that batteries will loose a percentage of their charge every day even if there is is not a draw on it. Batteries sitting in a discharged state can be damaged beyond repair.

It is my belief that using a battery maintainer on any vehicle, be it motorcycle, car, truck, boat, lawn mower, etc., is a good preventative maintenance idea. But that said, if you choose not to do so, it's your choice.

I've also read several places that most modern bikes will have accessories such as radios and clocks that will continue to draw a small amount of current even when working as designed, even if this is just a few milliamps.

Below is an excerpt from Deltran (manufacturer of the Battery TenderŽ brand of products). The link to the entire web page is also shown.

An automatic, well-regulated, temperature-compensated charger can keep the battery fully charged and at the same time minimize the risks of long-term damage to the battery due to either under-charging or over-charging. The alternative is to let the battery internal losses run their course, which for most batteries means that they are fully discharged within a few months. If you forget to recharge them periodically, and they become severely over-discharged, even due to only internal losses, the plates will become severely sulfated. For many batteries, that means that they are permanently damaged. Recommendations for Using the Battery Tender Plus in Continuous Float Mode Charging: The line regulation characteristics of the Battery Tender Plus are excellent; less than 1% for line voltage between 115 VAC and 125 VAC. This charger is temperature compensated and it has a special charging algorithm optimized for sealed, gas-recombinant, AGM, lead acid batteries. Numerous motorcycle owners have reported to Deltran over the years that their batteries have lasted 3 years or more. Before using the Battery Tender charger, they would have to replace their batteries as often as every 6 months.

Alright stupid follow up question. On the pigtail from the battery for the tender, how do I know which is positive? The exposed or the female part of the connector from the battery

I jsut got a new battery also last month..

It also is a AGM and I have had it hooked up to my Tender (from dealer) for two weeks now since we haven't rode for a while.

Working fine and as usual..

Are U sure U didn't cross the wires on U plug when U put in the new batt.

And the security system will drain a little bit from the batt over time.

The female end on the bike is positive so it doesn't short out.

I know the cheapie harbor freight ones say not to use on AGM batteries.

What kind of math is that?

I count 8 years myself(still a great battery life)......but I'm using old school addition/subtraction that I learned in grade school. This is still the year 2012 isn't it, or did I fall into some kind of coma and lost 4 years? lol

So I pulled the seat over the weekend to check my tender hookup. It was fine. Pulled the 7.5a fuse, again Fine. Routed the plug to where I wanted it, installed seat....NOW THE TENDER WORKS FINE...go figure
