Trickle Charger, How Long
POST EDITED TO REFLECT BATTERY TENDER, NOT TRICKLE CHARGER. I was mistaken in thinking I had a trickle charger when in fact it's a Battery Tender.
My bike has been sitting a few months without running. About a month ago I tried to start it up and it took a couple mins but eventually turned over but.......yes there is a but. It would only stay running as long as the headlights weren't on.
So I have a HD Battery Tender hooked to it but how long does it need to be on before the battery will come back to life? It's illuminated flashing green right now....which seems to be fine and represent 80% or greater battery capacity.
Any help is appreciated.

Not to say the Tender won't do the job, but it won't restore a full charge to a dead battery (or so my Indy Mechanic told me).
Best bet would be to connect battery to a Trickle Charger and use the Battery Tender to maintain the charge.

My 1999 FXR2 came stock with a battery that you had to add water to it occassionally. I got rid of it the first time it went dead and replaced with a self-contained battery. That battery lasted me for almost 10 years by keeping it hooked to a Battery Tender whenever it sat in the garage. I just recently replaced it with a new battery and keep it on the Battery Tender 24 x 7 when not riding (obviously).

Got the motorcycle started up this evening, same routine. Motorcycle would run as long as the headlights stayed off. Took it for a 30 min ride around the neighborhood and decided to test the headlights again......this time the bike didn't shut off (that's a good thing). They stayed on for the remainder of the ride will no ill effects.
I put it back on the battery tender and the light code shows now that the battery is more than 80% capacity.
Can anyone educate me on how a battery tender works please.
Go to the Battery Tender site and it is all explained there.
