EPA has fast-tracked the approval for 50% increase in ethanol
I personally try to keep ethanol out of my vehicles, but in theory ethanol is a great idea. Home-grown fuel, lower emissions, less OPEC reliance, etc. The problem, as many have pointed out is that most vehicles aren't really made to run on it, and it hurts the economy to redirect the use of corn for ethanol production.
I recently took a couple college courses about energy sustainability and climate change (among other things), and ethanol was discussed in detail. The hope is that we will soon be able to produce ethanol from fibrous plant waste like corn husks, or grasses that can be grown and regrown very rapidly. Once this is possible, there will be no need to use corn, and what will be used is basically what was previously considered garbage.
Where I have a problem is how the government seems intent on shoving it down our throats, despite what it may do to our cars/trucks/motorcycles. If the technology for both the production and consumption would get where it needs to be, then it would actually be a beneficial product.

There will be a time, in the not too distant future, where gasoline will be hard to come by and internal combustion engines will be "vintage" technology. For hobbyists, brewing your own alcohol might be the only option for keeping your cars, trucks, and motorcycles on the road. What is cool about alcohol is that you can make it from just about anything.
