+1 on this. My old Triumph I put a hard tail and fat tire on: First go round I mounted the rear fender too close. Looked good sitting in the garage, but when I got it up to speed, the tire expanded out and hit the underside of the fender. Ruined a good set of side braces I cut too short...

Seen a couple good one with the too close thing from paint catching fire on the rear fender to tires eating themselves and the best was a front the owner ran thru some hot tar and picked up a bunch of pea gravel that rolled up into it . Dimpled the hell out of it from the inside . You guys can have that slammed low and tight **** for show I'll pass .

It will happen with the fatter tires on rims too small no doubt. But with the correct tire on the correct rim growth at speed is not really a factor any more with tire designs out there today. You would really have to exceed the speed rating for the tire for that kind of tire expansion, not really capable of most Harleys. Low air pressure will cause this also.Back in the day when people ran 500-15/16 car tires it was a common problem. You really have to **** up the fender mounting for it to happen now. We have set up many front wheels and fenders this way with no problems. I wouldn't even suggest it if I thought it would ruin someones tire or fender.

Sorry for waking the dead but here's where I am now. Decided I didn't like the fenders on my bike so I swapped them out for what I had before. Here's what I found on my front when I looked. I am running a stock front tire for a Heritage on a Heritage wheel and the bike has not been in excess of 100 with that fender. You can see where some rocks went through and where the tire grew enough to kiss the fender.

Amen to that, G! Mismatched tire/rim width is probably the #1 cause of tire growth, broken bead, and bent rims. I don't think I've ever seen a closer front tire mount than I have on my bike with a 90/90-21 Avon, and never had a bit of trouble. I ride everywhere and don't baby it. It is important though to tape your spacing cord in three places during the mock-up, as you stated... and full circumference where the fender will cover the tire.
