Harper's Ferry is very scenic; lots of moutains, railroads, and the whole John Brown thing goin' on. I love West Virginia; prolly my favorite state & my favorite people.
If you head a little further west to Romney--take rt. 50 to Grafton. My favorite road in the whole world; tons of Americana, the Famous Hairpin Turn & Horseshoe Curve, and in Rowlesburg--Cool Springs Park, for the best cheeseburger & milkshakes this side of heaven!
If you're into the Civil War thing, there is a nice ride from Harper's Ferry to Sharpsburg, site of the Antietam National Battlefield Park and the bloodiest day in American Military history (23,000 casualties in one day). Take 340 east out of Harpers Ferry. Just after you cross the river, take a right on Sandy Hook and then another right onto Harpers Ferry Road. It takes you right along the river on the Maryland side, just across from Harpers Ferry, then up through the countryside to Sharpsburg. Have lunch in Captain Bender's Tavern in Sharpsburg, a biker friendly bar and grill that is always active.
If you want to know nice roads in Northern Virginia on your way to Front Royal (sort of) let me know. Those are my stomping grounds.
Dickey, I was just in Romney yesterday, but didn't have time to go further. I look forward to riding from their to Grafton when I have more time.
