Default Arkansas trip...

The Queens of the Road's annual gathering will be in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, July 24th - 27th.

Any advice on must do roads, sites, venues?

Also, if there are any HDF members that would like to meet up, maybe even lead a ride, let me know.

Thanks

Eve

Eve,,,Ya'll come on down.......Don't know your route here... but once you get into Missouri drop down around the MO-AR border an traverse that on into ES... Great riding on most of the hiways and byways in that area....If time permits, drop down from Eureka Springs down S.H. 23 (pig trail) on into the Mena area and back over the Talimena Drive which can get you back to ES....Might be more than a day's ride but you can do it in a day if you start early. S.H. 123, and S.H. 7 into Hot Springs is also good....

Have a safe trip and enjoy the sites....P.S. It will be quite warm that time of year...Unless this friggin winter is still hangin on.>>>>>>>

Zute - some of us are doing a fly & ride. Coming from NH, I don't have a lot of time so flying to St Louis and renting a bike. Hoping to get out to see family in KS first, then go thru OK to get to ES. Any knowledge of good route from the OK side?

BogieB..

Don't know about the roads up around Tulsa area but they should be good...Don't know where you will be in KS but if you're coming from the Salina-Wichita area I'd drop off to the state highways east of Wichita and ease toward Joplin MO, then toward Neosho MO. From Neosho you can take US 71 south to Rogers and over to ES or cutover from Neosho to Monett then down into Arkansas and ES. Those are all good riding... If you're further West in OK, then I'd drop down onto US 412 and head east. that's a good road and takes you right into Fayetteville/Springdale/Rogers area and on into ES> If you've got a lot of time, then come further south into OK and passed OK City and find US 270/OK 1 east toward McAlester then OK 1 to Talihina and the Talimena Scenic Hiway back to US 71 in Mena. From Mena it's about a 3 1/2 to 4 hr ride to ES or longer if you've not in a hurry and want to stop and see the sights...S.H. 23 (pig trail) is a great road to ride as are most from Mena up toward ES....

I would be coming from the Wichita area - thanks for the options to think of when I finally get settled as to my timeline!

bogieb, if you choose Wichita to Joplin route, I'd go south out of Joplin to Anderson. HWY 71 is a straight shot but 43 is a two lane that's goes thru the neat town of Seneca. 76 goes east off 43 to Anderson. The must ride part is 59 from Anderson to Noel. Biker friendly and interesting eatin' place is Truitts Cave at Lannagan. From Noel, 90 is a crooked ride east to Washburn. Then you can go south into Arkansas. If seeing the largest Harley dealer in the area is your plan visit Pig Trail Harley on the north side of Rogers, AR. Going east out of Rogers is a nice ride on HWY 12.

bogieb, If your taking the interstates from Wichita to Tulsa, HWY 412 east out of Tulsa to Springdale, AR, is the fastest. No much to see though. I live in Locust Grove. East of Tulsa on 412. There's several routes from LG to ES you could choose. Depends on your time. If your timings right I could be a guide.

Will you be going through Missouri or Tennessee to get there? If from Tennessee, I40 to Russellville, get off on Highway 7, and if it's mealtime, go south a bit less than a mile, and at a big intersection, will have a college on the right, and Feltner's Whatta Burger on the left. It's actually my favorite place to eat around there. If you have a couple hours to spare, about 10-15 miles south is Mount Nebo, and it's good practice for the twisties at Eureka Springs. Ok, maybe more like Eureka Springs would be practice for Mt. Nebo... Then just take 7 up to Harrison, and 62 across to Eureka Springs; I say "just", but it's a scenic road with lots of views and curves. Early in the morning, you can hit dense fog on the higher sections of 7; I'd pull off till it lifted, some of the locals that know the road go through it fast. If I ever went there again, think I'd take this route because the last time I did, I wandered through a bunch of those narrow little loopy roads and a lot of the time was stuck behind slow traffic - as in 10-20 mph; not much room for passing, either. Don't take a guy with you to Eureka Springs, he'll get bored out of his mind while you spend hours in all the shops.

I understand it's a meet at the Springs, but my favorite Arkansas rides are easy day rides from Russellville. Petit Jean Mountain to the east, lakes and dams, and a ride that can grind metal if you're not careful taking 7 down to Hot Springs; some of the curves start out deceptively easy, but don't stay that way. Arkansas is in my top 5 states for riding.

From St Louis, for anyone coming through that way, a suggestion - head south on Hwy 21 off of 255 just south of St Louis. Take that to Hwy 160 and head east. That will give you a very good sampling of what is in store for you when you ride the Ozarks. It's an awesome road. Take that west past Branson to 13, shoot south to 86, then run west to 23. 23 will take you right into Eureka Springs.

This isn't by any means the most efficient route to Eureka Springs. However, it is a damn nice one.
