YOU are a good man Charlie Brown!! I have been in his boat with a breakdown and know the helpless feeling. You did a good thing!
+1.
My family and I did help a stranded family of boaters one afternoon - didn't even think about it, just threw them a line and pulled them in. It's the right thing to do.

Its also the law in tx and ar I know. You must help stranded watercraft in open water.
not long after my gas gauge went bad on my NRS i ran her out of gas. i pushed her down the side of the highway for about 2.5 miles to the gas station. i got some honks but no one stopped here in Va. wouldn't have been so bad if it was september and 100 degrees outside. i was soaked like i was riding in the rain. on the good side it was good exercize at least.
You went through all those troubles to help out a stranded biker. I mean circling back, waiting with him, went to Wal-Mart to pick up a gas can to get gas, and even ask the guy to take off if his gas get there before you do. Sir, you got my utmost respect.
And if you ever come thru or stop by Indianapolis, I'd love to buy you a drink or 2.
