In regards to convertible tops,
Having owned a few convertible cars in my life and still owning one..several have rapid deployment systems that deploy the rear passenger head rests and automatically raise/lower the windows upon loss of ground contact or triggering of specific sensors. While increased rigidity is incorporated into the forward pilars..all done in an effort to increase the potential for survival in a flip over with a top down in conjuction with seat belts and airbags. Oldest car i had was a 1996 with such a system which seems to be more common now..european models seem to be more progressive on the rapid deployment feature...kinda like a mesh jacket..not the best protection but it is something.
Cheap compared to the medical and physical costs...
I'd venture a guess that she wasn't wearing any protective clothing so there's no way to say whether a $450 jacket would've done any more for her in this case than a $100 one.
Im looking for a riding jacket suitable for Florida summer. Yes, I suppose I could cover my self head to toe in leather but lets say I am willing to trade some protection for some comfort. This will be used for mostly around town where there will be no 70-80mph breeze to keep me from passing out. Suggestions?
Mesh - it flows a ton of air. The only thing with mesh is cheap mesh (<$200) is usually made of polyester which has virtually no abrasion resistance and melts into the skin in a slide on pavement. IMO look for ideally heavy Cordura (almost as abrasion resistant as leather), leather or nylon on the strike points of the elbows, shoulders, etc.
A wind/water liner is nice to have on cooler days. A wind/water/insulation liner can make it good for 3 seasons.

Or it she was just wearing a wife beater and cut off shorts...
I tell ya though, you have to have a slight feeling of immortality to even swing a leg over a motorcycle or you'd never get on one of the damn things.
Its either that or dress up like a space man and what's the point of riding a motorcycle if you can't even feel the elements and you're more confined and restricted than you are in your freakin' car?
Only reason I am starting to wear long sleeves more often is a melanoma I had removed. Actually it is strange it took 63 years to get one. Not taking chances anymore. Yeah, roadrash hurts but riding is supposed to be fun too.
Same here
I cut my lawn w/long sleeves and a boonie hat n gloves on the tractor
If it's going to be a cloudless bake to death type day I go for the long sleeve or zip the liner out of my Tourmaster jacket and open the vents. Had one really bad sunburn on my upper arms from a windy cloudless day, never felt sunburn pain like that before. No thanks, not again.
