Unless you love being in heavy traffic, avoid all the in-town riding along the coast. Our best riding is in the foothills and mountains, away from traffic.
Grew up in Calif (Ventura). I avoided LA just because of the crowds but would drive there for concerts, sporting events etc. Still go there several times a year and fly into LAX and take PCH up the coast through Santa Monica, Malibu to Oxnard. I'd ride it if I had a scoot there. Beautiful scenery and the traffic isn't bad on PCH MOST OF THE TIME. Avoid the usual rush hours (7-10am and 3-6PM) Have a great trip and be safe.
Ride from Santa Barbara to LV and back a few times a month, mostly doing 101/134/210/I-15. The drivers are way better than what I've ridden with in the east, much more biker aware and friendly.
Going LA proper I've never had an issue either when doing tourist stuff in Hollywood/Beverly Hills/Malibu. I will say the coastal highway between LA and Malibu is to be avoided at all costs on weekends, it's just a big parking lot.
There are no better drivers anywhere.I rode there for 35 years, every day.Had more close calls here in the last year than the entire time I was in So.Cal.

It's actually not bad -- you just need to avoid rush hour. Always have a back up route if something happens on the freeway. I do the same when traveling thru Vegas, Phoenix and Denver. SJ Ron
