Lightning!?
I got hit by a severe ground current on the Grand Teton in 1976 while guiding a small group up the Exum Route.
Luckily I was tied in to a belay while I was setting up the 120 ft. free rappel from a ledge going down the Owens Spalding Route after we summited.
The sensation knocked me up in the air and luckily I landed back on the ledge. The entire mountain was being hit by bolts all around and it felt like a scene from Dante's Inferno.
I've had close calls on a number of other high altitude routes in Colorado and the West and I can totally assure you that I do NOT take lightning or the hint of it in the sky lightly.
There was a biker about five years ago heading on the Boulder Turnpike from Denver to Boulder and he got hit directly on his helmet, crashed and was killed.
Lightning is REAL!
