The Wild Turkey distillery itself has no construction at this time. One of the old rick houses burned a couple of years ago. Jimmy Russell has been the master distiller for over 50 years and is a wealth of information and anecdotes. Van Winkle is produced by one of the Sazerac distilleries and is not a stand alone operation. The Buffalo Trace distillery is the oldest in the country. Don't forget Heaven Hill or Four Roses.
............too much whisky and not enough time,
We did Maker's Mark and Woodford Reserve.
Interesting tours but I'm not a real bourbon drinker but I do like the little chocolate candies filled with the stuff .
If the Buffalo Trace distillery gives samples of 23yr Pappy Van Winkle (named THE best spirit in the world last year, and is close to $300/bottle retail), I'd definitely try to hit up that one.
Thanks for the info. Pappy's is my favorite. A bottle of the 23 yr goes for around $220 around here. Problem is it takes about a year to get one.

The Beam tour was the least interesting of the ones we toured. Makers Mark was a good tour although you don't get a sample there, just a bourbon ball. You can purchase small bottles at Maker's Mark and dip the top in their red wax. The museum portion at Heaven Hill in Bardstown was very nice. The old Talbot's Inn on the circle in Bardstown has around 80 different types of bourbon on the back rail. One of my favorites was the Four Roses Single Barrel

Makers Mark. Went there on my bike years ago. Out in the middle of no place, old, small, the rack barns are right there. Walk right to the "beer" vats and stick your finger in. Wall over to the still and watch them fill the kegs. You can watch them open and kegs and bottle and the 2 old lady's dippin the wax on the tops will talk to you....very cool.
