In a "safety checkpoint", that would no longer be the case. Also, in a "safety checkpoint" I'm not sure what loud pipes have to do with safety. Polution, yes...safety, no. Thus it seems to me that writing a ticket for loud pipes would be outside the scope of a "safety" checkpoint. Bald tires, non-working lights, and DOT helmet compliance I would get.

This is the rub I have with "motorcycle" safety checkpoints. Why not just make them Safety Checkpoints and pull over everyone? They don't have Motorcycle Sobriety Checkpoints, do they? It's everybody. It tweaks me a bit that they would check my pipes for their volumn under the guise of "safety" while a car drives by with a headlight burned out or non-functioning turn signals.

I guess loud pipe laws are one thing I don't worry too much about here in CA. My big shots on my Dyna are louder than stock but still a lot quieter than most. Now the SE Slip-ons that are on my Sportster are a WHOLE different story but even with them I've never been bugged about them. At a checkpoint that would be different.

Buddy, I do agree with you, I think it's all chicken-****. I just believe from everything that I have read that there are no rights being violated, and that's what I've primarily commented about.

Some don't seem to be able to distinguish this, but there's nothing I can do about that!

Run with illegal pipes and you take your chances. I am.

How ironic you have a Gadsden flag on your bike.

Don't see how riders with loud pipes and wearing skull caps can complain about checkpoints on the grounds that there is no reasonable suspicion to stop them.

Any cop sitting on the side of the road can hear reasonable suspicion coming from a 1/4 mile away. And it certainly isn't hard to pick out the non DOT helmet wearers. So even without a checkpoint a cop could flag you to the side of the road and cite you.

Checkpoints just make the process more efficient, effective and safe for the officers.

For the most part cops don't bother riders for blatant violations like loud pipes and novelty helmets. I know a lot of skull cap wearing riders with loud pipes and not one of them has ever been stopped yet alone ticketed for these obvious violations.

So if I'm unlucky enough to get tagged in a safety checkpoint for non stock pipes once in a blue moon I'll just chalk it up as a riding tax.

Just like they determined Obamacare is constitutional, the only thing they care about the Constitution is shredding it.

folks come on down to DAYTONA we love your money!

you won't get any bullshit motorocycle only check points and the cops won't bother you, unless you are asking for them to come over to you

usually there are a few aholes in the crowd that just LOVE the sound of their own exhaust and just have to listen to it over everyone else while they are stopped in traffic, so the love to REVVVVVV their bikes up, which is great for an air cooled bike sitting in stopped traffic BTW, but that usually rings the doorbell of the POPO and will usually get you a talking to, possibly a ticket

other than that, burnouts, wheelies or other stupid **** on the roads that actually will endanger other vehicles on the road - the cops will leave you alone

seriously, loud pipes are a safety concern?

maybe a nuscence or something like that, but SAFETY.....haha!

I can tell you what loud pipes are, they are apparently a money maker in upstate NY!

Yea, that's me. A 58 year old computer programmer who moonlights as a cop.

Sorry (for you) that I have brains that I use to read and think with instead of just hollering "rights violation" every time there's something happening that I don't like.

You fit right in with the rest of the brain-dead masses, your rights constantly being violated yet not being able to enumerate what those rights are.

Grow up.

Personally, it twisted my stomach when I read their decision, and of course it was a split court....which means some hope for the future.

However, that doesn't mean that all SCOTUS decisions are trash either.

Many seem to forget that riding or driving on any public road in this country is a privilege, not a right.

mmancuso,

We realize that the courts have generally been upholding these police actions.
We also believe they are intruding on our lives, our liberty, & our pursuit of happiness.
Liquor was legal, liquor was prohibited, now liquor is legal.
Women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't vote, now they vote.
Whether by legislation or by court rulings, bad laws can change.
The 1st step is to object.

so you don't have a problem with every motorcycle being waved through a checkpoint while every other vehicle gets to pass by unhindered, illegal pipes or not? and you don't see that as infringing on anyone's rights?
