My V&H Longshots are getting a blue and yellowish burn on the top pipe right in the middle, about 3 inches rear of where the shield meets the rear end of the pipe. A mechanic friend of mine mentioned that it could be a defect in the pipe or my cylinder for that pipe is running way hot. After talking to someone who sees the screw ups of these geniuses at our local HD service dept. he mentioned to me that it could be that they put all the parts on but forgot to map the efi. I dont know much about anything when it comes to the mechanics of motorcycles(just bought a manual and Im trying)and want to know if this could be or is this a problem that happens to some pipes. The possability of the dealer messing up is real due to them being late by 3 days on putting my bike together and when they saw that I may hessitate for a 06 they called that day and magically they were done putting on about 2 days of work in just over 8 hrs. When I came to pick my bike up that night some things were put on half *** at best--like the shifter linkage, which popped off when I squezzed the clutch. They put on some of the chrome bolt covers and forgot some of the others. Forgot the mirrors in the garage, and left greese and finger prints all over the bike(no big deal but shows that they did a rush job). Im easy but not that dumb, obviously I picked the bike up the next day when they had more time to tighten some of the crap they missed. Now this! We spend thousands of dollars to make our bikes look as good as possible whether it be black or chrome, I happen to LOVE that shinny stuff, so when you get a blemmish on an otherwise perfect object it realy bothers you, and this is bothering me. If its cosmetic Ill go and get a new rear attachment, but what if they did screw up with the mapping could that carry over to some other parts that are a little more serious? So what could it be?
P.S. The bike and the pipes have 350 miles on them. I've seen longshots on my model(Deluxe 05) with thousands of miles with no burn whatsoever on any vissible part of the pipe.
It could be a defect with the V&H pipes, but I doubt it.
I'd be more concerned the bike was running very lean. Check your receipt and see if the download is listed. If I remember correctly, they enter your VIN into a computer when the d/l is installed. Also, there is a post in the DIY forum regarding checking for intake leaks which you may want to check out.
I have heard a lot of reports of problems with the HD download being too lean when coupled with Stage 1 and V&H pipes. A PC or SERT may be required. My friend put Long Shot HS's on his 05 Deluxe and after about 800 miles, he had to replace both plugs. One fouled over and the other was fried - firing through the side of the insulator due to extreme lean condition in that cylinder.
It's running too lean, and......The place where it's discoloring is where the baffling is inside the muffler, the baffling is getting hot enough there to blue it.
You obviously need a re-tune, becasue whatever they gave you for a tune caused this!
Worse case, get a Power commander and have it Dyno tuned, then maybe some anti-blue polish can clean up the pipes a little......
