Could someone explain what all the drive ratios mean? I see that all the time and I remember once I did a search (via Google), but never really found the answers I was looking for.
Bryan TTM do you have a 6 speed?I am getting a 98 kit form GMR and was told that the engine will run cooler with the 98 build over stockWas told there is really no need for an oil cooler especially if you run synthetic oil as well and change the oil at the proper intervals even in Phx.
34T front pully sprocket will drop the revs down enough for the highway and your engine will still pull it fine around town in 3rd and 4th. Hell of a lot less cash than a 6 speed...
buy the 98...it runs alittle cooler but a whole lot better...Steve has put together two very nice kits....
ratio's are just this....how many times the motor turns to turn the rear wheel one revolution(motor turns 3.15 times in stock configuration to turn the rear wheel once)....think of this, all hotrodders know that if you have a car with stock 3.08(highway) gears and you change the final ratio(done with ring & pinion gear) to a 4.10 it will hop when you hit the throttle...our bikes are no different...in 5th gear our baggers(01 and later) have a final ratio of 3.15...unlike cars we have a set of pulleys or sprockets that achieve this(take the tranny out of the equation for now)....we drive the tranny with two gears via the primary, one sprocket on the motor(stock is 25tooth) and one on the clutch basket(stock is 36tooth)....we also have two pulleys, one on the tranny(stock is 32tooth)and one on the rear tire(stock is 70)...if you decrease the # of teeth on the motor sprocket it will turn the tranny faster(speeding up the primary)...same is true if you increase the tooth count on the clutch basket...a 3.37 geared bike(pre 01) had 24 motor/37 clutch, our new bikes 3.15 is accomplished with a 25 motor/36 clutch...you can also change the pulleys but you must keep in mind how much adjustment you have on the swingarm as rear drive belts are much harder to come by with more or less teeth(if you get it too short cause youve changed pulley size and then cant get it to tighten up cause the slot in the swingarm aint big enough, youre screwed)...thats why most savvy gearheads change the primary, just more room for play and adjustment...in gearing considerations, the higher the # on the final ratio, the more low end you'll have...lower it too much and 1st can become useless...when you lower the final, you find the need to have a 6th so's you can putt down the highway at 2500 rpm....for instance, youre stock 3.15 geared bike at 70 mph in 5th will turn 2900 rpm(give or take a few), change to a 3.37 final and you will do the same 70 at 3150 rpm or close
6th goes in my bike at the end of the month....goal for me is to have a bike that'll pull wheelies down low and cruise the highway at 2600....gears are nothing more than torque multipliers...build a torque monster, gear it properly...smile lots
Bryan what type of 6 speed are you getting?Being I am getting the 98 Power Pack 1 what 6 speed gear set would suggest ? Considering I will not be changing the sproket.I have a 06 Night Train.thx

I like having the sixth gear for riding the interstate, I have a few buddy's with five speeds who say they're always looking for one more gear when running in the 65-75+ range.
What does the extra gear have to do with it ? if everyone has a 1:1 top ratio, everybody is the same ? cj
I think my 6th in the Jims is like .86:1. I can lope at 70mph
"Dunno the actual ratios, but I'd say the 4th gear in my 6 spds are the closest. I can drop down to that on the hiway w/the Outlaw and it is whoaaa Nelly time. "
I thought it would be 3 or 4 th, good if itâs one gear I can find that keeps me in one gear in the twistyâs (35 to 55) I am happy !!!
"I think my 6th in the Jims is like .86:1. I can lope at 70mph "
grunt, in 6 th and loping at 70 ! man it must be .86 nice, I canât wait till I get it !

The only problem I see with that is when changing the front pully for me itâs a sprocket is your changing all your gearing not just the top end, I did that too, some years ago, when upgrading my clutch I went from a 22 to a 24 tooth, drop at little but no 300 rps, if you can live with all the changes in all the gears, for the money, your right, it will come down, how much ? donât know it can be figured out with a formula, Baker has a sheet in the pdf download catalog you can get the ratio with changing the pullies.
