Default Help picking my New HD

Hello everyone. Great to be part of the HD community.

I've been paying into a awesome program for deployed soldiers to buy a new HD for a long time now. As I"m nearing the 6 month mark to choose my ride I've come to ask for opinions from other HD riders.

But I'll share a little of my history. I've been riding for almost 8 years. Started riding in Florida, and learned the thrill of riding in Washington State. I'm a proud owner of 4 Street bikes and only 1 car I ride nearly year round. And only take the car out once or twice a week max. I love riding on tracks, and have I've been to over 4 advance riding and track schools.

I've chosen to fulfill a dream of my fathers. He owned a HD as a young man, but was forced to sell it when he married and had me and my sister. He passed away almost 7 years ago now. And I'm at a point in my life we're I can live his dream of owning a new HD. I plan on custom paint that will honor him every time I ride to keep his memory and spirit to ride the open road alive.

I was looking at the Forty eight, Iron 883, or the Nightster. I'm leaning towards one of these for many reasons. I like that they all have traits of classics with a modern appeal. However, I'm unable to test ride any of these before I select so my chose will be determined by reviews, information, and rider input.

Finally being able to get a HD has been a Highlight of the year for me. I look forward to everyone's input on each of these machines. And I look forward to returning home and taking the HD for a ride as soon as I land..haha.

I have test rode these Sportys and personally i do not like them because of the stiffer suspension...They look good but for a older guy like me, i need a bit more shock travel like the custom...good luck.

Could you give more insight on your reasoning? Like notgrownup explained he does not like the stiffer suspension. Why do you prefer Dyna line over the Sportsers?

As a VERY general rule of thumb it seems most that are over 6 foot or over 200 pounds seem to be happier on something bigger. There are many that are over that that are perfectly happy on a sportster though.

The only thing a dyna has over a sportster is a higher price, as long as your not huge a sportster will do anything you ask of it.........trust me.

Because dealers usually have a bunch of low mileage Sportsters they took in trade when their original owners decided they should have bought a big twin in the first place.

I'm a shy bit over 5"7' with a lean build. I've learned from riding the classic 94 GSXR1100's that I'm "short"..haha

So since you seem to know a bit of the Dyna's. Out of the Super Glide Custom, or a Fat Bob. Which do you think as better seat height/ride position? I'm looking for a more "upright" Ride because I've got a injured back and my sportbike days are nearly over. So leaning forward to ride is not what I really want.

That would be a very valid option. However being a deployed military Member I've been buying in for 1 1/2 years into the HD program. I've got nearly $7,000 invested for a "new" HD of my choose. But I will keep this in mind when I get home and want "another" HD.

I had an 08 883 Low previous to my Road King AND LOVED IT! I put a Sundowner (2 up) seat on it with a sissybar and luggage rack for the wife and forwards on it for me for fit. As we started to do more riding together it was obvious that we needed something larger. After "chasing" after more storage with saddle bags we ended up biting the bullet and buying the King.

Had I been able to I would have loved to keep the Sporty. Stripped back as a single rider, it was more than an able machine, but alas. If you are looking to add to an exhisting collection, go for it! If you are looking to buy "the machine" of your dreams you may just want to consider starting bigger.

Either way, you'll be picking bugs out of your teeth with the sh** eating grin they'll put on your face.
