I've tried riding without a helmet while in Indiana, can't say I like it too much.
But then again, I shave my head and the sun beating down is not the most comfortable thing in the world.
Baby But head here as well. I wear a Boonie hat with mesh flow through vents to keep my noggin cool and burn free. Works well. I like it better than a ball cap for the cool (non heat) factor and I can stick it in my back pocked or wherever when I'm parked and don't have to worry it blowing away in a gust of wind.
EDIT...If you every decide to try one, make sure to get one that doesn't have any firmness to the brim. I have one that has a reinforced brim and it wants to create lift like an airplane wing when I get up to speed.

I would ride without one but I got really bad hair already, rarely ever go without a ball cap, like Beatlejuice after an indian attack. Afraid to shave my head cause it would scare my kids to death - and my dog. Not a big doo rag fan either. Seriously if I had the same hair I had in the seventies (like Vinny Barbarino) I'd be riding without - at least just when it's hot.
