helmets or no helmets?
2)Does burn me up tho that peeps with no ins. go sans helmet then suck
off the public tit when they get a crushed skull.
3) I rode the whole country (where possible) without a helmet because I have a lot of life ins, then thought what if I dont die?? Being spoon fed by my wife until she decides she deserves a life for the next 30 years would be worse than death.
4) Life ins does not pay to spoon feed vegetables
5) Disability ins is EXPENSIVE, I know I have that too.
Anyhoo, there, I bought in to this dead horse...

I am just talking about the arguments of wearing helmets in general. I think most people are just trolling when they ask such questions or they are looking for validation for their decision to wear or not wear a helmet.
As I said, what people are really asking is if they will look cool and be accepted by the inititated who don't wear helmets if they choose to wear one. Will I look like a sissy?
It is kind of like a woman who might ask, "Does this dress make me look fat?", but in a roundabout way. Image is a big factor in something like biking. That's just the hard truth. That is neither good nor bad. It's just the way it is.
Those who don't wear helmets but get all worked up about the argument are also looking for validation, IMO. They want someone to tell them they will be ok and they spend most of their time constructing arguments to convince themselves and others why they don't need to wear one. As with skiing, the argument is usually something like, well, if I fall and am going fast, a helmet won't help me so I choose not to wear one. Another common justification is, if I fall it will twist my kneck and kill me. The truth is, a lot of people don't wear helmets just because they are not cool. I can't look like a bad-*** rebel if my face is covered and their is a lid on my head. The arguments constructred are just attempts to justify their decision in their minds. Of course, not all. But many do this. As a ski instructor, I see this all the time. I have found biking to be the same, really. If helmets were cool and attracted chicks, almost every biker out there would be wearing them. When asked why, they would not say because it looks cool. They would construct safety arguments.
Everyone else just doesn't bother engaging the discussion because they don't care about the arguments. They quietly do what they feel is right for them , without trying to justify the decision to others or attempting to seek validation for their personal choices. They quietly let people make up their own minds without judging them either way. As far as the govt making this decision, I aggree with you but that is another discussion.

I wear one if I'm going to be moving at highway speeds, but around town I prefer to feel the wind in my (thinning) hair, lol.
Actually public perception is changing, many perceive it as silly looking and not cool at all.
Ignorance is bliss, isn't it?
