I just bought the Canon S100 last week from Best Buy. I had a $400 gift card to burn, the sales clerk quoted me $425, I asked if they had a match program and she said they would match their online price of $363.99. Need to get an extra battery, criticism of 200 shots per charge holds true, but you can source out a brand x batteries for much less. Also doesn't come with and SD card. Keeping it in a Pelican micro case on the boat and bike.
The GoPro and Contour are intriguing, but I can't help wonder how badly the vibration from a big twin would mess with them when mounted to the bike in some fashion. Not going to go that route, but just curious for maybe later on.
I've never had a vibration issue with my GoPro mounted to my engine guard (forward view) or my passenger peg (rear view). The camera was inexpensive and is easy to operate.
DPREVIEW.com is great and respected site for camera reviews. You can't go getting information there. Getting information from Bestbuy.... don't rely on it.
I am a Canon shooter and I have been impressed with the Canon G12. It allows me to control my exposure settings with ease (if you are into that). I have also heard nothing but good things about the Canon S100.
Unfortunately I can't offer advice on other manufactures.
I went to Best Buy today and checked out the Go Pro, Cannon S100, Nikon Coolpix and the Panasonic Lumix models all mentioned here. They didn't have much in the way of Pentax and Olympus at this store unfortunately.
Just a comment on Best Buy, DAMN fellas I hate going in there, I got pounced on not two feet inside the door! The young sweet thing that tried to help me had good intentions, but she didn't know a thing about cameras. She even went to get her manager and he was totally lost. We used to have the greatest little mom and pop camera shop downtown but they closed their doors last year; very sad.
I like the price, and a still camera with video capability is what I want. What do you think? Any glitches with this one?
Honestly, Best Buy and other chain stores that will sale you movies, car stereos, and skittles are the worst places to take advice from. You just nod your head and pretend you're listening to the good little associate that's trying to earn their living and a sinking ship.
On the other hand, specialty camera stores are usually over priced and depending on where you god, they can be full of pretentious ****** that couldn't photograph their way out of a wet paper bag.
