i heard that the harley oils r junk, i have never owned a harley, my first, yeeepee,, someone told me to run 20-50 in all three holes, is this the norm.? if so would something like the lucas 20-50w synthetic oil be good? or should i steer clear of the sythenic oils? or any suggestions would be apprecitated,.
thanks
Harley does not make their own fluids, they just slap their label on em. I run mobile 1 20w50 vtwin in the motor. Harley fluid in the primary and tranny
Lucas fluids aren't any better than Harleys are. They have very weak additive packages.
K. For your engine any 20w-50 will do. You do not need the expensive v-twin oils. They are a biker tax as far as I'm concerned. An automotive 20w-50 is more than adequate for your engine.
The primary needs a jaso MA spec oil. Rotella t 15w-40 conventional meets this spec and is cost effective.
The tranny needs a gear oil. Not an engine oil. I use shockproof heavy and I like it however I have used royal purple gear oil in it without issue as well.
As far as the synthetic vs conventional use whichever you like. A synthetic doesn't protect any better than a conventional but it does protect for longer. So if you plan on 3000 mile drain intervals then don't waste your money on synthetic. Any name brand conventional will protect just fine beyond 3000 miles. A synthetic will last beyond 5000 miles so it's up to you,how often do you want to wrench on your bike. Make the oil decision based on that.
And just a heads up,mobil 1 will contribute to more top end noise than other brands. It has on my bike anyways.
While at Sturgis, I spoke with a Mobil 1 Rep about their V-twin synthetic oil and he said their v-twin is good for all holes on HD's G/box, prim and engine. Which is great news I have been using Mobil 1(car) oil in my Heritage for the last 12 years, without any problems but I will bulk buy the new V-twin that makes for easier servicing.
