Default Auto tuners

I have a 2008 softail deluxe with 1200 miles just put some Samson tru duals fish tails with short baffles. Also put on a Peromance machine air cleaner. The question is should or do I need to put a auto tuner on.? If so what one is recommended for this set up if any out could help, it would be helpful. THANKS.

Yes you need some kind of tuner on it at this point. Auto tuners get a lot of good reviews from what I have read, but are costly. But then again once you get something like a sert and pay to have it dyno tuned, you have almost spent just as much as a auto tuner. Then if you change anything or add more performance parts you need to dyno again with a sert. So a auto tuner would be the way to go if you can afford it.

Default auto tuner

Would you have any suggestions on what kind or brand to invest in?

Not to give you a hard time, but if you have owned the bike since it was new you don't need an autotuner. For > 300 miles a year all you need is a dealer download...
It will save you lots of money and you won't notice the difference...

If you do decide to go with an auto-tuner, contact Fuel moto USA. They are a sponsor on this forum and you can scroll down this page and click their link on the right under "Sponsors". They can help you out with questions you may have to get the right setup for your ride.

I'm running a ThunderMax with Auto Tune. It does a fantastic job and dials in the tuning while you ride. Uses its own ECM and wide band oxygen sensors. I highly recommend it.

When you say "auto tuner" I'm going to guess that maybe you don't really mean a realtime automatic tuning device but rather just a tuner that has an adjusted air/fuel mixture to compensate for the exhaust and hi-flow air filter you've installed. There are realtime devices as mentioned in other posts and they are expensive. There are many more "mapped" devices that either have a pre-computed map for your set-up or allow a technician to set the map with the help of a dyno. If you're not doing any engine mods, the cheaper ones might be the way to go. If you plan on cams or other engine mods, you should invest in either a tech/dyno-tweakable model or an auto-tune. The autotune feature is also good if you travel to different elevation locations as it will sense the engine performance and adjust accordingly.

Thanks for all the Info it was very helpful. At mswing you knocked some sense into me almost dropped 899 on a auto tune by thunder max. Thinking about Vance and hines fuel pack for alot less.

Go and try the Fuelpak, it might work just fine. I put one on my bike when I did the mufflers and intake. After a year or so of trying to get my bike to run right, even with pretty good tech support from V&H, I installed the TMax. Now it runs perfect. BTW, I got the TMax from a sponsor here for under $700. That was a few years ago, so look around.
