Hey Ya'll

A quick question about a Torque Wrench. What to buy? I’ve only used the "get it tight method".

I have never used one so, do I need more then 1, I see things going in ft/lbs and in/lbs?
Yesterday when I change my oil with Squirrel he did not use one. I can see where the O-rings or gaskets can be damaged this way easily and the need for the Torque Wrench. Do you carry spares (O-rings/gaskets) on a road trip if you change the oils in a parking lot? (I’m planning a 4 corners run that will be over 10,000 miles so I will be changing out on the road)

Is Sears the place to go.. I see them for around 200.00 .

Sockets I have 5/8 for the oil change but the Torx 27 I need to get. Is there another common Torx I need or should have for down the road?

The link about the 4 corners run.

The sears units are a good value
Here's what I have
TOOL # 8000733592- 1/2 inch drive- foot lbs- MODEL #44597 Digital unit, real nice to work with

Tool # 4030681248- 3/8 inch drive- inch lbs. - MODEL #44595
Both made by craftsman, good units, both are the clicker types

The #27 torx bit is very important too, most people usa a #25 only to strip out the bolts .The rest of the torx usually come in the kit.

Booger,

You need one, get in/lb and ft/lbs...get the #27 torx, take your time searching, you'll eventually find it. You'll need to need to get a 1/4" to 3/8" drive converter too...without it your 3/8" drive in/lb tq wrench won't drive the smaller Torx sockets, and you'll be "tighten 'till it's tight" method again.

Someone once posted a really good tool website...I just searched for it and couldn't find it...maybe they'll read this and post again...

What a timely topic!

I just paid a visit to Sears today to check out the torque wrenches. A 3/8" drive (non-digital) in in/lbs was "on sale" for $64.95. A similar "ft/lbs" wrench was also $64.95. The digatal varity that Mr. "Money bags" has was $99.99 I believe.

There were two emply hangers that once contained cheaper wrenches, but I don't know what they were regarding range/capability.

Thanks Mac,

Is that something the "tool guy" at Sear will understand if I ask for it? (The drive converter)

Someone posted the pricing and its cheaper then what I found on line Sears so that is good.

I did find the Torx T27 on the Sears site also. So I should be in good shape in my next 5k changes.

Thanks a bunch..

Now I need to start practice cutting some liter bottles to catch the oil run off from the filter.

The only things that I wonder about if the heat from the engine will/would melt the coke bottle? I don't want melted plastic on my bike for sure. I did see a tray on the cruiser site that looks like a loaf pan with one side cut out to run off the oil. I may try that its aluminum and just cut off one end and it looks like the same thing to me and found at any grocery store. It can’t be more then a few cents and worth the effort if it works.

Nope, that's not the site, but that's a good one. I couldn't believe how much the fork tube seal installer was...Holy CRAP!
