Default Buying with no Speedometer

I am looking into buying a 1999 sportster 883 but the one thing is that it doesnt have a speedometer on it. so it also doesnt have a odometer on it.
my question is how bad of a idea is it to buy this bike?
the guy says it has about 20k miles on it ( no way of know if hes telling the truth)
he says he purchased the bike with no speedometer.

is it legal to have a bike without one in CA?
how much does it cost to buy a new one to put on?

thanks for any help!
scott

Seriously???

"It only has about 20k on it" is the same as:

1. I'll respect you in the morning
2. I'll only stick the head in
3. I'll call you tomorrow
4. They all do that
5. Now this is no bullshit....

Stay as far away from that pos bike as you can.

Additionally I don't think you can pass inspection with no speedo

Seriously, you are looking at a 14 year old bike. What difference does the miles make anyway? Federal odometer disclosure rules only apply to vehicles less than 10 years old anyway.

If it had an odometer, on a bike that old the title would be stamped miles exempt. This means no one has certified the miles as being correct, so the odometer may or may not reflect the true miles.

And yes, you can get a bike inspected in NC with out a speedometer. Also don`t need turns signals either.

Yes Froggy, seriously.

I have been a licensed auto dealer in NC for 26 years, & I have bought & sold thousands of vehicles.

On a car (or bike) over 10 years old, mileage doesn`t affect price as much as age.

We are talking about things with a price of $X,XXX.00, not $XX,XXX.00

You're the one buying the bike and you should know if it runs solid or not. If it were me, I think I'd go more by what I think of the bike and forget about the miles although 20K in 13 years is believable especially with a 883. It isn't exactly a long distance cruiser to begin with. Take it with a grain of salt. Some don't ride much. I've got a neighbor that has had Harleys forever and he rides maybe 2 or 3 times a month and usually only puts maybe 50-100 miles on it when he does ride. If it looks good, runs good, and the price is right, I say, why not? If you want a speedo, get one and put it on. That wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if I otherwise liked the bike.
